They will head to Deep River Landing to cheer on runners at the halfway point before both Train and runners. Friends and family members board the train at the start and leave the station at the race start. (Closes at 5 p.m.) Only about a 5 minute ride from Essex Station. The Steam Train Half Marathon and 2-person relay is the only road race in the country where runners try to outrun a century-old Steam Train. Olive Oyl’s is a great lunch option located in the heart of Essex village. The Black Seal Restaurant is a personal favorite for lunch and dinner… and the staff is really friendly! We have loved everything we ate on our visits! Only about a 5 minute ride from Essex Station. The Griswold Inn has a great restaurant for lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast! Only about a 5 minute ride from Essex Station. Be sure it doesn’t get in the way of your plans by giving yourself more than enough time to get to the station! Plus, if you’re going on a nighttime train ride, a little extra time will allow for a great opportunity to check out the holiday lights on the way! It’s recommended that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your train’s departure. Kids ages 1 and up must have a ticket to board, and infants on laps under the age of one do not require tickets. As an added safety precaution, cocoa is not being served on the trains and cookies are delivered in bags for you to take home with you. Rides begin November 19 and run through December 23, 2022. All unvaccinated guests are required to wear a mask. You are also asked to wear your mask while visiting any indoor areas including the Gift Shop, Restrooms and River Valley Junction and in any space where you cannot maintain a safe 6-foot social distance. Wearing a mask is required while riding the train, regardless of vaccination status. So, it’s definitely a win-win! COVID Safety Protocols ![]() ![]() The scenic views of the fall foliage in October were indeed spectacular, and presented a great photographic opportunity. The ships narrator did an excellent job pointing out the sights and giving a historic overview of the river. Overall the river cruise was spectacular, with the highlights being a sail by of the impressive Gillette Castle and a turnaround near the picturesque Goodspeed Opera House at the Haddam Bridge. There are bathroom facilities available on board as well as a snack bar. The riverboat Becky Thatcher is a small but quaint vessel with seating on 2 levels plus an observation deck which is limited to 40 passengers at a time. That said, the best portion of the train experience for us occurred at the Essex Station, as we watched the train engineer and coal pilot prepare the steam engine for the 1 hour trip north to Deep River Landing. Although the train ride portion of the trip was interesting, the scenic views were somewhat limited. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with the river cruise being the highlight. My wife and I booked the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat trip as part of their Fall Foliage program. ![]()
